2nd grade Zoo Trip

ACOS # 6: Identify characteristics of animals, including behavior, size, and body covering.

Vocabulary Words

Habitat- The place where an animal or plant naturally lives or grows.
Cold Blooded- Having a body temperature that changes with the temperature of the surrounding air or water.
Warm Blooded-Having a body temperature that stays the same even when the surrounding air or water’s temperature changes.
Species- A group of animals or plants that have many characteristics in common.

The second grade classes from George Hall Elementary went to Gulf Shores, Alabama to the Zoo. We saw many animals, including amphibians, goats, tigers, lions, bears, and monkeys. We learned about different species of animals and how to group animals into different species. We also learned about habitats and why it is important to conserve animal’s habitats. We learned about warm blooded animals and cold blooded animals and what the differences are in each. The zoo that we visited was featured on the Animal Planet’s The Little Zoo That Could.

George Hall Elementary is located in the Maysville community in downtown Mobile, Alabama. This wiki site is dedicated to student work revolved around the grade level field trips. The technology team at George Hall started this site last year as a project for 21st Century Technology. We decided to continue this because of the excitement of the students involved in the various podcast, blogs, and videocast. We encourage people to respond to the student's work.

MUSIC IN EDUCATION

Serious Learning, Serious Fun!

George Hall Elementary has adopted a sizzling new music program. “It’s like a textbook with keys” and carries the name Music In Education (MIE). Music In Education (MIE) is a hands-on general music program emphasizing the learning and application in all aspects of music. This is fostered through the use of technology-driven Yamaha classroom keyboards. Electronic keyboards offer many possibilities as learning tools and performance instruments in the music classroom. In an interactive hands-on format, students can use an electronic keyboard to learn about sound, composition, improvisation, and recording. Since children have already been exposed and are learning through the use of new technology, it is second nature to them.

We felt that now is the time to make technology work for our music classroom. With more and more students becoming computer users, and with the evolutionary nature of technology yielding more powerful and less expensive computers, and electronic instruments, it seems inevitable that technology will continue to play a major role in music education.

The Music In Education (MIE) curriculum is built around a cooperative learning model in which students work together in peer teaching and peer learning to experience music concepts at hand. Each lesson allows the students to be actively engaged through singing, playing, moving, creating, improvising, and reading.

The MIE curriculum materials support and encourage the integration of other methods and materials that will enhance student understanding and achievement. Therefore, we additionally integrated an award winning music software program coupled with MIE called Music Ace.

Music Ace introduces games with each of the lessons. Providing additional practice with concepts covered in the lessons, as well as reinforcement of new learning, a highly enjoyable set of games comprises the second learning environment. Upon completion of a lesson, students enter a game environment of colorful graphics and sound effects which make additional practice and mastery of new skills a lively and fun experience.

The idea behind MIE is that it is a general music program in which we have the students engage in active learning and active participation and the technology captures the imagination of students and provides motivation for learning. “Music in Education brings music to life.”

Special Invitation to Five Rivers Delta Tour

Selected students and teachers were invited to participate in the filming of an episode for Discovering Alabama Educational Television Show. We were given an opportunity to hunt for Red-Belly Turtles, view wildlife, and learn many interesting facts about the Mobile Delta. The students returned to George Hall and constructed a wonderful photostory sharing what they learned. Watch for us on the Discovering Alabama Education television show.

Math Lab

The Math Lab at George Hall Elementary School is run by a full-time teacher who teaches second through fifth grade classes four days a week. On the fifth day of the week the Math Lab teacher serves as the school’s math coach by addressing curriculum needs of students and teachers. During this time small groups of students are pulled to work on specific math issues. Materials and lessons are also created for teacher’s who have identified areas of need for their classes. The Math Coach creates problem solving assessments that are administered school-wide. These assessments are scored and return to teachers’ with detailed notes concerning a class’ progress.

The Math Lab focuses on teaching the state assigned curriculum through data collection, hands-on activities, and test prep assignments. The purpose for teaching math through the use of hands-on activities is because math is a life-long skill that must be internalized rather than learned through rote means.

Lessons are prepared based on what the second through fifth grade teachers have to cover during each quarter. Since each class comes to the Math Lab 45minutes to one and a half hours, depending on the grade level, one time per week we typically cover curriculum needs each grade level specifies for that particular week. For example, if the second graders are learning about making change, then the data collection activity, hands-on activity, and/or test prep questions will be about money and making change. At the beginning of the year to mid-year the lessons usually begin with a math story that is the basis of the whole lesson. Mid year to the end of the year the Math Lab takes on more of a test prep role since state testing begins in April of each year.

In Alabama, we take the SAT 10 and Alabama Reading and Math Test (ARMT) as our high-stakes assessment. In order to prepare the students for the math portions of these tests the Math Lab teacher meets with teachers to see that in-class instruction includes prep time for items that have been outlined in the compendium for the SAT 10 and blueprint items such as open-ended questions and gridded response questions for the ARMT. These curriculum items are also addressed in the Math Lab so students become familiar with the format and content that will be on the high stakes assessments.

The Math Lab is a place for students to come and learn about math in a hands-on way with math tools that help them better to internalize math concepts. It is our distinct belief that having a Math Lab has increased test scores in the area of math.

It should also be mentioned that our school has a contract with an individual math consultant who is a retired mathematics supervisor. She comes several days within the school year to meet with the Math Lab teacher, classroom teachers, and students to work on specific curriculum needs. Her presence has also greatly affected our math scores on local assessments and high-stakes assessments.

Environmental Studies Center "The World of Living Things"

In a variety of indoor and outdoor settings, students were taught basic concepts about plants and animals. They had a classroom presentation using native plant and animal specimens. They went on a hiking trail to observe different plant and animal habitats.

Interview with Janis Kearney

Have you ever talked to a person over the computer? Well my classmates and I did! It was blast! We talked to Mrs. Kearney and asked her about her childhood and her book she wrote. {Cotton Fields of Dreams} She has one son who lives in Atlanta and is graduating from law school in May. She had 17 siblings when she was a child and all their names started with a J.

This is a photograph of a bulletin board that was made by the students after the interview with Ms. Kearney. They learned so much from her and her book.

The George Hall Story

The School was built in 1964 and was named for the first teacher from this community employed by the Mobile County Board of Education. George Hall was a renowned African American writer who was also known for his proficiency in mathematics and English. In the early days of segregation, Hall was a junior high school but returned to its elementary status in 1991.

We would like to take our audience on a virtual field trip of Mobile, the Maysville Community and the school where we live, play, and learn.
