Walking Tour of Downtown MobileThis is a featured page

Fort CondeThe fourth grade students participated in a Downtown Walking Tour of Mobile. We enjoyed touring Historical Fort Conde, The Phoenix Fire Station and Museum, The Museum of Mobile, and The Mardi Gras Museum. This tour was hosted by the Junior League of Mobile. The tour was full of history about our city. We learned about the early explorers and the settlement of Mobile. As we toured the different locations, we discussed architecture in historic homes and buildings. We learned about Spanish, French, and British influences in our history. We enjoyed the beautiful day and had a nice picnic in historical Spanish Plaza. All the students received a workbook with fun activities to reinforce what was discussed.

The students shared their learning by writing short paragraphs about their favorite stops on the tour.

Did you know the famous artist Leonardo Da Vinci designed Fort Conde? The Fort is designed in the shape of a star. There were huge cannons facing the water in order to protect them from being attacked. The barracks were cool and dark because they are under the Fort. I learned that most soldiers were short. The hallways and doorways were very low because of this, I loved the Fort.

The walking tour and Fort Conde field trip was fascinating. My favorite part was seeing how the soldiers lived. The barracks were very dark small and crowded. I would not have liked to have been a soldiers during that time. Learning how the guns were loaded was interesting it took them a long time for a soldier to load a gun. I thought it was neat to walk on top of the tunnel. I didn't know the tunnel was built on top of Fort Conde

Our class vist to Fort Conde was tiring but exciting. The shooting of the cannon almost made me jump out of my shoes. The tour guide know a lot of stuff about Mobile. It was sad when he told us that many of the soldiers couldn't read. It made me think how blessed I am to going to be getting an education.
