Fifth Grade’s December Field Trip

5th Grade-Oakleigh Historic Complex - George Hall ElementaryWow, we had a blast on our December field trip! The fifth grade students at George Hall went to the Oakleigh Historic Complex. The antebellum mansion was decorated for Christmas with golden magnolia leaves and sugared fruits. It was breathtaking and we learned so much about colonial life from our tour guides. We learned how to make candles and how to spin cotton. The most exciting part was getting to see all the antiques that were used in everyday colonial life. Our social studies objective (ALCOS#12) is to be able to describe the impact of the Civil War on social, economic, and political life in the United States. We not only learned how life changed in the United States after the Civil War, but how those changes specifically affected the south and slavery laws. After we left Oakleigh, we went to see “A Christmas Carol” at the Saenger Theatre. The play was excellent. Each cast member gave a memorable performance. One of the reading objectives covered during this part of our trip is ALCOS #34 (To organize and present information in visual, oral, and or print form). The other objective is ALCOS# 35 (To exhibit skill in dramatizations and other oral presentations). The students were able to hear their vocabulary words used in the play, which has led to an increase in their comprehension of their meanings. The tests we gave after returning from the field trip were excellent. The classes seem to have mastered both the reading and social studies objectives focused on by our field trip.

Hey Guys,

Sounds like you had a great time on your field trip, huh?! It was really cool to be able to see your pictures because it kind of let me go on a field trip while sitting on my couch! I think my students would be jealous because we haven't gone on any field trips yet this year....(I'm a sixth grade teacher)

So I have a question for you: I noticed that the bed that you had in your picture collection looked really short. Was it?

Do you think that people have been growing taller over time? Do you think that the continent that you live on determines how tall you're likely to get?

What makes people tall----or short?

Interesting questions, huh?

I saw In the first picture that there was a women by a table that was in old clothing, that was weird to me.Were you on a trip to old place or were you in a place where you learned about the past?
