1st Grade Courthouse

On Wednesday, March 21, 2007, the first graders of George Hall Elementary had their day in Federal Court. The students appeared before Judge William Steele. They had many questions for the judge like how to become a judge, or how come he has to put people in jail. They even talked to the probation officer. He is the person who keeps track of people after they get out of jail. The Federal Marshall like Walker Texas Ranger was there also. She picks up the bad guys and brings them to court. The F.B.I was there too. Do you know what the F.B.I stand for? The students learned that the F.B.I stood for “The Federal Bureau of Investigation”. The first graders got to act out our day in court with a “mock” trial. There was a judge and court deputy. The students learned about who was a witness and the court reporters. The court reporter records everything that is said in the courtroom. Students also participated as sworn officials. They represented attorneys, the marshall, and the defendant. The students loved participating as a jury and listening to the evidence. But the judge made the final decision. We learned a lot in court that day.
This field trip helped our students so much with “experiencing” the Social Studies Alabama Course of Study #10: Discuss civic responsibilities of participating members of a community and state, and Social Studies Alabama Course of Study #11: Identify roles and responsibilities of leaders within the community and state. The vocabulary words we learned that day are in bold

Your teachers showed us your photostory at a meeting yesterday. I really liked it. I wish I had cool teachers like that when I was your age.

Our meeting was in Gardendale, close to where I grew up. Do you know where that is?
