1st Grade
On January 31st the first graders at George Hall took a field trip with the firemen from the Houston Street fire station. Their first stop was at the firefighting training site. Here the students witnessed the firemen set a fire and put it out. The students also visited the classroom where the firemen study and learn how to be good firefighters. The next stop on the field trip was Ladder 8 on Lafayette Street. Here the students saw what firefighters do when the alarm goes off at the fire station. After leaving Ladder 8 the first graders headed to Ladder 9 off Houston Street. Here the students met Mr. Lansberg and his puppets. Mr. Lansberg and his puppets taught the students what to do if their house caught on fire. The students also learned songs about fire safety and acted out what to do in an emergency. The field trip to the fire station was exciting, but we also want it to be educational. The teachers chose vocabulary words that went along with firefighters. The firemen helped explain the words bay, hazardous, emergency, and back draft. Students also learned about the breathing apparatus that the firemen use and why it is so important.

Hi! I'm a teacher in Mississippi. I really enjoyed your photostory about the trip to the firefighters' training center. You described everything so well; it sounds like you listened very closely. I hope some of you are considering careers as firefighters or as reporters!
